After Nina left, the show's creators were left with a significant plot gap. They also decided to include the heretics and the Salvatore family drama. Many viewers were disappointed that Elena and Katherine were not returning for the new season, but Mary Louise and Nora quickly won them.
The girls played the show's first lesbian couple, which seemed to be a significant breakthrough for diversity. However, they were eliminated almost immediately after they appeared.
Several alterations had to be made to adapt the book series for television. Adding Nina Dobrev as Elena/Katherine also resulted in significant changes. The antagonist vampire in the book is a young German woman named Katherine von Swartzschild.
The show's creators eventually decided on an actress who could fulfill the role honorably for eight seasons when it came time to cast Elena. However, Nina doesn't have her literary counterpart's golden hair or blue eyes.
The decision to release Katherine Pierce, formerly known as Katerina Petrova, as her double was based on her appearance and fluency in Bulgarian. The actor had to play many different images, which she did expertly.
The fact that the plot had a sizable fan base put a lot of pressure on Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson to pick the right actors. When revising the story, Damon was one of the most sought-after. Paul Wesley was first considered for the role of Stefan, but he was advised to try out for Damon instead because he was too old.
It was ultimately decided that Paul was the only actor who could play the role of Stefan to perfection. Before the casting of Ian Somerhalder as Damon, Zach Roerig and Michael Trevino auditioned for the role.
Anyone who has read the novels knows that the program's plot differs entirely from the books'. The series finale served as a fitting finish for fans of Delena. This was only sometimes the intention, though. The show's makers planned a tragic ending for the brothers during the second season's filming, while Elena would go on to either pursue a career in medicine or fall in love with Matt Donovan.
Kevin Williamson said he'd always thought Elena and Stefan would be a couple. However, Nina left with several plot suggestions for the Elena/Katherine duo. Because of this, the creators reconsidered their original ideas and devised a solution that reflected their initial zeal.
